Indian Market Trading Hours & Settlement Mechanics
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) adhere to the standardized calendar declared annually. Understanding trading vs settlement holidays ensures seamless fund availability.
Standard equity market sessions run from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST (Monday through Friday), preceded by the 9:00 AM – 9:15 AM Pre-Open auction window.
On Trading Holidays, exchange matching engines remain closed. On Clearing Holidays, trading occurs but bank clearing is suspended, shifting settlement to the next business day.
Under India’s world-leading T+1 rolling settlement system, shares purchased on Monday are credited to the demat account on Tuesday, excluding intervening exchange holidays.
An auspicious 1-hour special trading session conducted each year on Diwali evening to mark the beginning of the traditional new financial year (Samvat).
